Through the use of softness in my materials I manipulate a mirage around the hardness of my elected subject matters. The sentiment in this choice relies on the philosophy that if you make something hard into something soft, that it becomes more approachable, palatable, and relatable.
Growing up within an Arab-American diaspora, I tackle issues around my fetishized heritage and the imaginary of homeland. I arrive at these issues formally, using above all – assemblage. Allowing pieced fragments of fabric with disparate origins to stitch together a story of hybridization and dual consciousness.
